EMI was not the only company to publish a newsletter for the cyclemotor they manufactured. Sinclair Goddard’s publication was not as slick as Cyclemaster’s ‘Magic Wheel’ but it was not short of endorsements for their baby, the Powerpak.

The ‘Power Pak News’ (Volume 164 from 1952 reproduced below) was for dealers only, and comprised only 4 pages; but over 50 years later enthusiasts may find it interesting to browse….

1951 Festival of Britain

Sinclair Goddard & Co Ltd was chosen by the Council of Industrial Design to exhibit the Powerpak at the 1951 Festival of Britain. It was shown at the South Bank and also in the travelling exhibition that went around the country.

I think Sinclair Goddard probably stole a march on their main rivals Cyclemaster and Trojan in terms of marketing in those first few years. In the photo below you can see a Powerpak advertising the 1951 Earls Court Show – under a slogan that summarizes why clip-ons and cyclemotors were popular in this short period of time in the early 1950s:

Power Pak Synchromatic

My Power Pak Synchromatic is not the best looker I’ve owned. But it’s MOT’d and runs fine, and is mounted on a BSA Gents Bicycle.

Although I’m not sure about many of the claims made in the Sinclair Goddard literature, I’ve always found Power Paks to be well-made machines, and I seem to have had less trouble with them than other makes I’ve used.

They are easier to work on than Cyclemasters and, in my opinion, more reliable too.

With an endorsement like that, maybe I should have made this a Power Pak museum instead? Of course, the Cyclemaster is an icon, and an icon does not have to be the best performer of its genre. And the Cyclemaster does have another big advantage over the rear-mounted clip-ons: we don’t have to destroy the rear mudguard when we fit it.
